Company Description:
The purpose of Leadership Education In The Arts Project (LEAP) Dance Education Project is to bring quality dance programming to local public schools due to the decline of arts studies since the passing of the No Child Left Behind Law. LEAP assists in the overall success of minority inner city youth, by providing healthy activities in a safe environment to help youth reach their full potential.
LEAP Dance Education Project (DEP) provides dance instruction to minority youth living in inner cities and to youth in public schools. The emphasis is on dance technique, choreography, vocabulary, history, and performance. The students can take classes in ballet, modern, and hip-hop. The students set short-term goals they can achieve through LEAP. In our afterschool program "Fifth Position" students meet after-school two days a week for 90-minute session, in the public schools. LEAP Dance Education Project also offers classes at a local dance studio for youth whose schools may not be participating with Dance Education Project through school. DEP offers workshops/master classes given by professionals in the dance/theatre field. DEP offers field trips to LEAP members to attend professional shows. All dance classes culminate with a Final Showcase. Some students will be selected for our Dance Education Project Summer Intensive which provides a comprehensive course of summer study in several forms of dance. Classes are in session Monday through Friday for the duration of the full eight weeks. The program ends with a final performance. Dance Education Project also offers specialized services like Parent's Night Out in which parents can drop their children off at the dance studio and the students watch a dance movie, learn a routine from the movie, have pizza and drinks, and socialize with other students in a safe environment, while the parents get to go out for the night.
